Schilderen is een schaakspel. 
Volgens Catharina Dhaen vertelt een schilderij hoe dat spel verliep. Voor haar is dat het enige verhaal dat er echt toe doet en dat feitelijk staat neergeschreven.De rest is onderhevig aan veranderingen in tijd en ruimte. Eveneens belangrijk is de wetenschap dat niks wat over het schilderij beweerd wordt, helemaal juist of helemaal fout is. 


Schilderen is spelen.
 De schilderijen van Dhaen uiten het verlangen om te begrijpen. Altijd gaat alles over perceptie. Een verhaal. Een blik. Het licht. De schilderijen uiten ook het verlangen om wat vluchtig is te grijpen, om het vergankelijke tastbaar te maken. 

Altijd in het achterhoofd houdend, deze zin uit “Een schilder is als Oedipus onderweg”: 
“Schilderen is geen heroïsch gevecht met het materiaal. De essentie van het kunstenaarschap is om van materie “geest” te maken. Om van verf, licht te maken.”

Painting is a game of chess. To Catharina Dhaen, a painting is a report of that game; it is the only narrative that really matters and that is put down factually. The rest is subject to change in time and space. Also crucial is the realization that nothing that is said about the painting is entirely true nor entirely false.
Painting is playing. Dhaen’s paintings express the desire to comprehend. Everything is always about perception. A story. A look. The light. The paintings also express the desire to capture what is fleeting, to make tangible what is transitory. And always at the back of the mind, these words from Een schilder is als Oedipus onderweg (‘A painter is on the way like Oedipus’): ’Painting is not a heroic battle with the material. The essence of the artistic is to turn matter into ‘spirit’. To turn paint into light.’
