Rachel Monosov is residerend kunstenaar in een plaatsje in Zimbabwe. Als geschenk aan een nabijgelegen dorp stelt ze voor de modderen muren van een van de hutten roze te schilderen. De dorpsbewoners reageren enthousiast en vragen haar niet een hut roze te schilderen maar het hele complex, inclusief de buitenmuren die vanop de openbare weg te zien zijn.
Deze esthetische daad stelt noties over ontwikkelingshulp in Afrika in vraag. Wat gebeurt er wanneer een kunstenaar een geschenk aanbiedt dat veeleer haar eigen formaltistisch programma dient dan een praktische noodzaak? De artistieke ingreep in het landschap voedt het debat over de esthetische, politieke en culturele verhoudingen tussen Afrika en het Westen.

Rachel Monosov is artist in residence in a small town in Zimbabwe. As a gift to a nearby village she offers to paint the mud walls of a hut in pink. The villagers enthusiastically accept and request that she not only paint one hut, but the entire homestead and its outer walls which can be seen from the public road.
This aesthetic act questions ideas of aid and assistance in Africa. What happens when an artist offers a gift to people that serves her own formalistic intentions rather than pragmatics? The creative pursuit of bringing friction to the natural landscape ignites a dialogue regarding aesthetic, political and cultural relationships between Africa and the West.
