De Spaanse dichter Antonio Machado schreef ooit: 'caminante, no hay camino, se hace camino al andar' (wandelaar, er is geen pad, een pad ontstaat slechts wandelend). Als er dus geen pad bestaat dan datgene dat we maken, geld zoiets ook voor het scenario. Het openbaart zich pas wanneer we anders naar dagelijkse kijken of wanneer we minder tastbare paden bewandelen.
De werken in Sampaio's Caminante beginnen bij wandelingen door Gent. Uit deze wandelingen werd de wil geboren om de grenzen van de stad te vinden, wat later zou evolueren in een wil om meer intieme grenzen op te zoeken, die van een huis bijvoorbeeld. Hebben sommige werken te doen met facetten van het stadsleven, dan zijn er andere die zich integendeel terugtrekken en beschutting zoeken, daarbij onderzoekend hoe het is om ver van huis vandaan te zijn.

The Spanish poet Antonio Machado once wrote: 'caminante, no hay camino, se hace camino al andar' (wanderer, there is no path, the path is made by walking). If there is no path but the one we create while walking, the scenario around the track is also absent until it becomes alive in the presence of the walker. It can be revealed by a different look at everyday routes, or in crossing less tangible roads.
The works present in Sampaio’s Caminante used the act of walking in Ghent as their starting point. The walks strengthened her will to find the borders of the city, which later would evolve into a will to discover more intimate limits, the limits of a house for example. If some works relate to details of urban life, others take the inverse step and walk backwards towards shelter, reflecting on how it is to live far from one’s homeland.
