In Heartland ontmoeten we De Hagiograaf die het spoor volgt van Faith, een soort heilige. De zoektocht leidt hem steeds dieper in het landschap waar Faith ooit haar problemen probeerde te ontvluchten. Haar stem spreekt tot hem via notitieboekjes en tekeningen die ze heeft nagelaten. Het brengt hem van het ene opmerkelijke landschapsbaken naar het andere. Zodoende dringt hij zowel dieper de wildernis als haar ziel binnen.

Naast een oefening in storytelling is Heartland ook een psyschogeografische schets van Middelton Moor (Derbyshire, VK) en de verlaten steengroeves die er als reusachtige wonden het uitzicht van bepalen. De geschiedenis van deze streek wordt op fictionele wijze geparafraseerd. De industriële en agriculturele ruïnes en de fauna en flora krijgen op die manier een quasi-allegorische lading.

De grote levensthematiek van historische heiligen en mystici is nooit ver weg, zij die de maatschappij verwierpen om in eenzaamheid antwoorden te vinden, zij die in de natuur de taal van het absolute zochten, zij waarvan de mens het nooit kon dulden dat zij volkomen ontsnapten.

In Heartland we meet the 'Hagiographer' as he traces the past journey of 'Faith', a saint-like figure, into the landscape where she sought to escape her troubles. Like a ghost, her voice speaks to him through the notebooks and drawings she has left behind. These lead him from one striking landmark to another, deeper into the wilderness and deeper into her soul.
As well as an exercise in storytelling Heartland is also a psychogeographical portrait of Middleton Moor (Derbyshire, UK) and the abandoned quarries that are gouged into it like colossal wounds. The history of the land is warped by this fictional tale and indeed the industrial and agricultural ruins and the flora and fauna take on allegorical meanings beyond their locality.
Themes are evoked from the lives of historical saints and mystics: those that renounced society in order to seek answers in solitude, those that sought in nature the language of the absolute, and those that humanity never allowed to fully escape.
