Deze fotoreeks brengt individuen in beeld die bewust de keuze maken zich terug te trekken uit de samenleving. Ze leven alleen of hebben slechts vrijblijvende relaties met anderen. Zij verkiezen hun teruggetrokken, stille bestaan, los van opgelegde verwachtingen, boven het ijltempo van onze hedendaagse maatschappij is. Buiten de samenleving leven is echter nagenoeg onmogelijk. Bovendien streven deze mensen niet naar onzichtbaarheid. In tegenstelling tot wat vaak verkeerdelijk wordt aanzien als mensenschuwheid hebben deze individuen geen probleem met het aangaan van intermenselijke relaties. Wel lijken ze te verlangen naar vrijheid die hen toelaat simpelweg zichzelf te zijn en te leven volgens een door henzelf bepaald ritme. Deze vrijheidsdrang gaat zo ver dat ze allerlei systemen loslaten en afstand doen van basisvoorzieningen zoals stromend water en aansluiting op het elektriciteitsnet. Welvaart en welzijn komen voor hen overeen met autonomie en de vrijheid om niet geleefd te worden. De drang naar onafhankelijkheid van maatschappelijke verzorgingssystemen impliceert dat ze zelfvoorzienend leven. Hiervoor vallen ze terug op hun indrukwekkende inventiviteit om met de troeven en beperkingen van hun leefomgeving om te gaan.

This photographic series portrays individuals who deliberately choose to withdraw from society. They live alone or have only casual relationships with others. They choose to live in quiet seclusion, unfettered by the expectations and unrelenting haste imposed by contemporary society. Yet living outside of society is practically impossible, and neither do these people strive for invisibility. Contrary to what is often thought, these people are not unsociable and have no problems with entering relationships with other people. They do, however, seem to long for a freedom that allows them to simply be themselves and to live by a rhythm they set for themselves. This striving for freedom is behind the often radical decisions of turning away fro mall manner of structures and basic facilities like running water and electricity. Prosperity and wellbeing they define in terms of autonomy and the freedom not to be lived by others. Their ideal of independence from social care systems implies self-sufficiency, so they fall back on an impressive inventiveness to deal with the benefits and limitations of their environment.
