Als eindproject brengt Bram Verhaeghe eigen werk samen met bassist Kobe Boon (Steiger) en drummer Elias Devoldere (Nordmann, John Ghost, Hypochristmutreefuzz). Onder de naam 'Grote Prijs Nijlpaard' levert het trio een stevige portie verpletterende jazz. Dat Bram niet enkel met jazz opgroeide, blijkt uit zijn eigenzinnige composities die sporen tonen van progressieve rock (o.a. King Crimson, Zappa, Univers Zero), metal (Meshuggah), mathcore (The Dillinger Escape Plan), klassiek (B. Bartok, A. Berg) maar zeker ook jazz (The Bad Plus, Craig Taborn). Het eclectisch pianotrio combineert doorgecomponeerde stukken met vrije improvisatie. Na deze voorjaarsklassieker huppel je niet naar huis met een aanstekelijk deuntje. Grote Prijs Nijlpaard laat niemand onberoerd, ten goede of ten kwade:

Bio / Credits

Bram Verhaeghe (Menen, °18 april '85) volgde klassieke piano bij Carlos Dewilde (1994-2003) en AMT bij An Verstraete (2007-2008) aan de Stedelijke Academie voor Muziek en Woord te Menen.
In 2007 behaalde hij zijn professionele bachelor Muzikale Opvoeding aan de Arteveldehogeschool te Gent.
Hij genoot zijn eerste jazzopleiding in 2008 toen hij les volgde in de Jazzstudio te Antwerpen. Hij kreeg er pianoles van Jeremy Calbert en Augusto Pirodda.
Sinds 2010 volgt Bram de opleiding jazzpiano aan het conservatorium van Gent. Hij studeerde er vier jaar onder begeleiding van Christian Mendoza. Zijn huidige docent piano is Erik Vermeulen.

Bram didn’t grow up on jazz alone, and this is evident in his distinctive compositions that show traces of progressive rock (King Crimson, Zappa, Univers Zero), metal (Meshuggah), mathcore (The Dillinger Escape Plan), classical (Bartok, Beg) and, yes, also jazz (The Bad Plus, Craig Taborn). The eclectic piano trio combines through-composed pieces with free improvisation. One thing that is sure: you won’t be skipping home from this grand prix humming a little ditty. Grote Prijs Nijlpaard leaves no one unaffected, for better or for worse.
