Hoe we de buitenwereld ervaren primeert op de adequate weergave ervan. De weergave van de atmosfeer of het karakter van het onderwerp is primordiaal. De essentie van de compositie.

De expressie is gelegen in ‘de gehele compositie van het schilderij’ en niet in hevige bewegingen of hartstochten die van een gezicht afstralen. Licht en kleur op het doek zijn afhankelijk van de emotie en vrije expressie van de schilder en niet van wat de wetenschap of maatschappelijke conventies voorschrijven. Vormen en kleuren op het tweedimensionale vlak bieden geen realistisch venster op deze wereld. De interactie tussen de vaak gewild onrealistische kleuren is belangrijker dan een letterlijke verwijzing naar fysieke realiteiten.

Enkele zorgvuldig gekozen details tillen het geheel naar een nog intenser belevingsniveau. Met een trotse houding en een niet onder woorden te brengen voorkomen, werd deze dame protagonist in een aantal uit het geheugen geschilderde doeken, eerbetuigingen aan "all the women who blossom in secret".

Our perception of the world around us depends on how it is depicted. Thus, depiction of the atmosphere or nature of a subject is of paramount importance. The very essence of a composition.

Artistic expression lies in "the composition of a painting taken as a whole", not simply strong brush strokes or passionate facial expressions. The play of light and colour on the canvas depends on the mood and free expression of the artist, rather than on the requirements of science or social conventions. Shapes and colours on a flat surface cannot provide a realistic window onto the world. Interplay between often deliberately unrealistic colours is more important than a literal reference to physical realities.

A few carefully selected details elevate the composition as a whole to a more intense level of experience. With a proud posture and an ineffable appearance, this woman became the protagonist of a number of canvases painted from memory, tributes to "all the women who blossom in secret".
