Voor mijn afstudeerrecital opteerde ik voor een reis door de tijd, zij het één van nu naar vroeger, een reis door het klarinetrepertoire, waarin solo- en begeleide stukken voor gewone klarinet en basklarinet aan bod komen. Ik begin met de Fantasie van Jörg Widman, een goed in het oor liggend werk met een jazzy toets. Vervolgens speel ik Solo para clarinete van Carmelo Bernaola, wat mij betreft het belangrijkste stuk op het programma. Net als mij is de componist uit het Baskenland afkomstig. Samen met een groep componisten draaide hij tijdens en na het Francoregime de muzikale klok terug. Het derde werk is een solowerk voor basklarinet van Erland von Koch. Daarna volgen Krzysztof Penderecki´s "Three miniature pieces" en "Tema con Variazioni" van Jean Françaix. De laatste halte van deze reis is Brahms' tweede sonate voor klarinet. Aan het eind van de negentiende eeuw was hij het die de combinatie klarinet met piano nieuw leven inblies.

As my graduation recital I have chosen a "trip back in time". A journey through the clarinet repertoire, in which solo and accompanied pieces for clarinet and for bass clarinet are presented. Jörg Widman’s jazzy ‘Fantasie’ is a smooth opener, and is followed by what I consider the central piece of the programme: Carmelo Bernaola’s ‘Solo para clarinete’. As a Spanish and Basque musician, I feel I owe a lot to this Basque composer who ‘turned back the clock’ for Spanish music during and after the Franco regime. The third piece on the programme is a solo piece for bass clarinet by Erland von Koch. This is followed by Krzysztof Penderecki’s ‘Three miniature pieces’ and Jean Françaix’ ‘Tema con Variazioni’. The last stop on the journey is Johannes Brahms’ Second Clarinet Sonata Op. 120. The clarinet and piano duo was a rare combination in Brahms’ era, and his two clarinet sonatas are considered a major contribution to the repertoire.
