Persoonlijk artistiek project: Across My Universe

    Biography

Lucie De Ley was born in Roubaix in 1984, France, and started the piano at age of 6. She attended classes at the Conservatoire de Lille from 1989 to 1999. After a few years' break, she gradually returned to music during her studies of translation in Brussels (ISTI), following several master classes with Vladimir Viardo in France and later on regular lessons with Sergei Leschenko in Brussels. After graduating as a translator she applied to study music in the Royal Conservatory of Ghent, where she attended classes with Vitaly Samoshko and Daan Vandewalle. She also took composition classes with Frank Nuyts and besides the Conservatory she has been following courses of jazz singing with Marie-Sophie Talbot in Brussels.

  • Master project: Quelques touches de clair-obscur

Lucie De Ley's master’s project mainly embraces works from the 20th century, such as Dimitri Shostakovich's second Sonata op.61, Maurice Ravel's Sonatine, a Prélude Elégiaque written by Paul Dukas, un Adieu, rare piece written by Giacinto Scelsi, as well as one of her own compositions, Toccata Enchantée. These different works alternately convey a certain darkness or brightness, and the links between them result in a subtle game of light and shade, as in a chiaroscuro. The Toccata Enchantée she wrote in 2014 is an original combination of modern classical piano with jazz singing, a piece in which she intended to create an organic relationship between the voice and the piano.

Personal artistic project: Across My Universe

‘Across My Universe’ is a project that consists of eclectic arrangements of songs by the Beatles. Lucie De Ley initially wrote these arrangements for piano and voice solo, configuration in which they do work, the piano part being quite fleshed out, but then she thought that adding a rhythm section as typically used in a jazz combo (drums and bass) would emphasize the structure of the arrangements and help reinforce the groove. In order to give those arrangements a very personal touch she incorporated them with classical music, mainly composers of the 20th century such as Stravinsky, Debussy, or even ideas and techniques of contemporary composers such as George Crumb. In this project she plays and sings with bass player Nils Vermeulen (Ghent Conservatory) and percussionist André Wittmann (Hochschule für Musik Lübeck).
